lead yourself

Lead Yourself

Leading Yourself First

The First Person You Must Lead Is Yourself

Many people dream of becoming leaders.

They want to lead a family.

They want to lead an organisation.

They want to lead a business.

They want to lead the community.

But Islam teaches one important principle.

Before you can lead others, you must first lead yourself.

A person who cannot control himself will struggle to guide others.

Allah Commands Us to Save Ourselves First

Allah says

Surah At Tahrim 66 Verse 6

“O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones.”

Notice that Allah mentions yourselves before your families.

Self leadership comes before leadership of others.

Every Person Is Responsible

The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said

“Every one of you is a shepherd and every one of you is responsible for those under his care.”

Sahih al Bukhari

Sahih Muslim

Before leading others, we are responsible for our own actions, words and character.

What Does Leading Yourself Mean

Leading yourself means

Controlling your tongue

Controlling your anger

Managing your time wisely

Keeping your promises

Being honest

Being disciplined

Seeking beneficial knowledge

Avoiding sinful behaviour

Doing what pleases Allah

Control Your Tongue

Many people damage relationships because they cannot control what they say.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”

Sahih al Bukhari

Sahih Muslim

Every word spoken is recorded.

Before speaking ask yourself

Is it true

Is it beneficial

Is it kind

Control Your Time

Time is one of Allah’s greatest gifts.

Allah says

Surah Al Asr 103 Verses 1 to 3

“By Time. Indeed mankind is in loss. Except those who believe, perform righteous deeds, encourage one another to truth and encourage one another to patience.”

Successful Muslims value every minute.

They avoid wasting hours on gossip, endless scrolling and meaningless conversations.

Control Your Desires

Allah says

Surah An Naziat 79 Verses 40 and 41

“But as for the one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from his desires, Paradise will be his home.”

True leadership begins when a person can control his own desires before trying to control others.

Do Not Follow Every Emotion

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said

“The strong person is not the one who defeats others in wrestling. The strong person is the one who controls himself when angry.”

Sahih al Bukhari

Sahih Muslim

Real strength is self control.

Be Honest Even When Nobody Is Watching

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was known as Al Amin, the Trustworthy, long before he became a prophet.

Leadership begins with honesty.

People follow those whom they trust.

A Daily Self Leadership Checklist

Prayed all five daily prayers on time

Read some Quran

Learnt something beneficial

Controlled my tongue

Avoided gossip

Used social media wisely

Helped someone today

Asked Allah for forgiveness

Improved myself today

The Best Leader Starts With Himself

Islam does not teach us to change the whole world overnight.

It teaches us to change ourselves first.

Allah says

Surah Ar Rad 13 Verse 11

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.”

Every great leader begins by becoming a better servant of Allah.

Final Reflection

The greatest victory is not over other people.

The greatest victory is over yourself.

Lead your heart.

Lead your mind.

Lead your tongue.

Lead your time.

When you learn to lead yourself for the sake of Allah, people will naturally trust, respect and follow your example.

May Allah make us leaders who first lead ourselves with sincerity, wisdom and taqwa.

Ameen.
